Low-cost, robotic Microscope with Image Analysis for Malaria

Intuity Minimic - Low-cost, robotic Microscope with Image Analysis for Malaria

Intelligent Lab Equipment

Advances in AI algorithms, sensors, and microprocessors will enable affordable intelligent laboratory instruments. After two years of development at Intuity Media Lab, we created the Minimic – a compact, cost-effective light microscope that not only magnifies but also detects and counts objects. With integrated AI-powered image analysis, the Minimic delivers a complete solution from sample to results, saving time and ensuring high-quality analysis all with a great user experience.

Design Approach

The design and architecture of the device are radically different than conventional microscopes. Since there is no human involved in the process, aspects like rigidity and sharpness of the image could be omitted in favor of creating a more compact and more affordable device.

My Role

I fulfilled the role as lead designer and part of the core development team responsible for the development of the overall industrial design, electronics, hardware and first software including the auto-focus algorithm.

Exhibition

The Minimic is part of the `"`KI-Studios`"` Exhibition by the Federal Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs showcasing exceptional applications of AI in the industry.

Also, the project received the following awards:

  • German Innovation Award Winner
  • Focus Open Gold
  • UX Design Award Gold
